Polychlorinated Biphenyl Waste

Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) regulations located in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 40 Part 761 govern the manufacture, processing, distribution, use, storage, treatment, and disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and PCB items.

All KSC organizations and contractors are responsible for proper identification, management, and disposal of PCBs and PCB items. The KSC requirements for PCB waste management are found in Chapter 19 of KNPR 8500.1 (KSC Environmental Requirements).

In addition to PCBs associated with electrical equipment, there is documented existence of PCBs in various building materials (such as paints, coatings, caulk, mastic, window glazing, adhesives, cable insulation/sheathing, etc.) across KSC and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The KSC landfill is able to accept certain types of non-liquid PCB waste for disposal. See the KSC landfill page for those requirements.
