The following are frequently asked questions regarding rocket propellants and receiving rocket propellant support at KSC and CCAFS.
First, you must submit a Forecast:
– NASA customers use NASA form 558.
– DOD & Commercial customers use DLA form 858.
Next, submit a Program Requirements Document (PRD) which specifies propellant type, quantity, quality, sampling, and container requirements. NASA programs will use data in their Launch Site Support Plans to write their PRD. Liquid Propellants and Fluids Management can assist you in defining your PRD requirements.
If using Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Defense Fuels Supply Point (DFSP) -provided propellants, then customer must establish an account (e.g. DODAAC or FEDAAC) with DLA:
– A FEDAAC is like a “checking account” which will pay for the propellants issued by KSC/CCAFS DFSP
– NASA Launch Services Program customers can use their FEDAAC. Contact your Launch Site Support Manager for details.
– Establish a Task Order with KPLSS.
– For hypergolic propellants, give 40-day notice to the KSC Propellants Contractor so that specific containers can be assigned to your program.
– For other propellants, give 7-10 days notice to the KSC Propellants Contractor
– Shorter turnarounds are possible. Plan ahead and avoid potential program delays. Order early, not late.
– Helium, liquid and gas, MIL-PRF-27407, Grade A
– Hydrogen, liquid and gas, MIL-PRF-27201 or CGA 5.3
– Hydrazine, MIL-PRF-26536, High Purity grade
– Kerosene, RP-1, MIL-PRF-25576D
– MonoMethyl Hydrazine, MIL-PRF-27404
– Nitrogen, liquid and gas, MIL-PRF-27401, Grade A, B, or C
– Nitrogen Tetroxide, Low Iron grade MON-3, MIL-PRF-26539
– Oxygen, liquid and gas, MIL-PRF-25508, Grades A or Grade F
– ABO, MIL-PRF-27210
– Plus various scrubber solutions, solvents, and other specialty fluids. If you don’t see what you need on our list, ask, and we can probably get it for you.
Hypergolic Propellant Delivery Containers at KSC/CCAFS:
– 5, 30, 34, 55, and 120 gallon DOT4BWCylinders
– 500 gallon DOT51 GPTU
– one ton DOT110A500W cylinder
Cryogenic liquefied gases in 4,000-13,000 gallon tankers or small dewars
Pressurant Gases in compressed gas trailers, k-bottles, and Moveable Storage Units
Others in tankers, drums, cylinders, etc. appropriate for your application
GN2 and GHe Pipelines: Many KSC/CCAFS Facilities are provided with GN2 and GHe via a separate pipelines to wall panels inside the facilites.
