Access via water is another primary transportation capability at KSC. Currently, waterway access is limited to the turn basin in the Launch Complex 39 area. NASA is modifying this capability to allow for transportation of SLS booster rockets. This upgrade will not only improve NASA’s ability to transport rocket segments, but allow for new opportunities to ship resources via the Banana River barge route. This seaport capitalizes on KSC’s natural geographic features along with its existing manmade infrastructure.  In addition to providing transportation capability, the Banana and Indian Rivers serve as natural buffers between CCAFS and Titusville to ensure that KSC can safely conduct operations away from nearby development.
